Fake Degree: Mukesh said, Himachal Government in the dock for not taking any stringent action

Shimla: The startling revelation by the UGC regarding fake degree racked run by two private Universities has put the Himachal government in the dock for not taking any stringent action against the defaulting Universities said leader of the opposition Mukesh Agnihotri. The Congress had opposed opening of private universities indiscriminately and out of eighteen Private Universities, nine Universities were set up in Solan district alone and the failure of the government to evolve an effective mechanism to regulate the Private Universities and sale of degrees was outcome of callous attitude of the government, which has made HP Private Educational Institution Regularity Commission defunct. The matter is very serious as it has put a big question mark on authenticity of degrees and jeopardizing the future of the students and a high level judicial enquiry should be instituted to expose the alleged irregularities and malpractices of Private Universities, he said. The UGC pointed out the sale of degrees by universities in August, 2019 and wrote to Regulatory Commission to hold a thorough enquiry but no action was taken, which points towards complicity of the government and Education Regulator.

The allegation “Education for sale” has been proved right and degrees given by the Universities in Himachal would be seen with suspicion and students would not get jobs and admission in reputed institutions outside the state. Further, the allegations of some Private Universities issuing degrees to students without attending the classes and appearing in the examination are need to be probed and the students who were allegedly awarded degrees without appearing in the examination by identified and their degrees should be cancelled. The scandal had brought a bad name to the state and in case the erring Universities should be stopped from making fresh admissions and criminal cases be registered against the management and their properties should be seized. The government screens the records of private universities and takes action against the Universities not abiding by the conditions stipulated in the essentiality certificate. An exit clause be inserted in the Acts of private universities and their assets should be taken over by the government in case of default. The government must take the responsibility for this mega scam and take stringent measures to dispel the apprehensions that it was not shielding the culprits. The Congress party would not allow any activity that would sully the image of the state and take this issue to the logical ends.
