CSKHPAU doubled its wheat breeder seed production

Palampur: “The efforts of CSK H.P. Agriculture University to make Himachal Pradesh self-sufficient in wheat seed production have achieved a major breakthrough” said Prof A.K.Sarial, Vice-Chancellor. He told that the planning of the last three years has yielded positive results. During the current rabi season, the University is expecting to harvest 300 quintal breeder seed of improved wheat varieties from its Seed Production Farm at main campus. It is double the quantity that was being produced in 2016.
The Vice-Chancellor told that the Department of Seed Science & Technology of the University is producing breeder seed of five wheat varieties, viz. HPW 236, HPW 249, HPW 349, HPW 360 (Him Palam Gehun 1) and HPW 368(Him Palam Gehun 2) that are recommended for cultivation in 3.50 lakh hectare total area of wheat in the State. The productivity of these high yielding varieties ranges from 40-45 q/ha in irrigated and 25-28 q/ha in rainfed areas, besides possessing good quality and resistance to yellow rust. “The glimpse of the standing crop at University farm (picture), revealed that an estimated seed yield @ 30q/ha from main campus and its out-station research farms a total 600 q of breeder seed is likely to be produced in the current season.
