European Council President Charles Michel says he expects to visit Tibet during the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue
Brussels: The European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a high-level virtual meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss their relationships. The video call was a downgraded version of the initially planned in-person summit of Xi and the heads of state of all 27-member states to be held in Leipzig, Germany, this month. But the in-person summit was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The meeting addressed “four key issues”: climate change, economic and trade issues, “international affairs and human rights,” and “Covid-19 and economic recovery.” President Michel raised concerns over the treatments of minorities in Tibet and the treatment of human rights defenders and journalists. He also hopes to make a field visit to Tibet during the upcoming EU-China Human Rights Dialogue in Beijing later this year.
